Sarasota National Cemetery

Since opening to the public in 2009, the 295-acre Sarasota National Cemetery has served as the final resting place for hundreds of fallen heroes, highlighting Sarasota’s history as a military site for flight training. Funerals are still held at the building on a regular basis, but visitors are invited to pay their respects. Sarasota National Cemetery is one of Florida’s seven national cemeteries, and it is the last resting place of 21,121 veterans as of September 2019. The Department of Veterans Affairs bought the land from private people in April 2007 and hired Miller Legg & Associates of Winter Park, Fla. to construct the new cemetery. Phase IB is virtually complete, with about 18,200 full casket gravesites, 15,200 preplaced crypts, 9,000 in-ground cremains, and roughly 7,200 columbarium niches. The cemetery is located in Sarasota County, about four miles east of Interstate 75, on State Road 72. The Hallowed Grounds of the Cemetery are for casketed and cremated remains to be deposited on the grounds or in the Columbarium niches. Other infrastructure design elements include roadways, landscaping, utilities, and irrigation, as well as an administration and public information center complex with an electronic gravesite locator and public restrooms, a maintenance facility, a cemetery entrance area, a flag assembly area, a memorial walkway, and a donations area, as well as two committal shelters. The Patterson Foundation of Sarasota donated the 2,800-seat commemorative amphitheater “Patriot Plaza,” which was finished on June 28, 2014. Patriot Plaza is an amphitheater with world-class public art pieces with the goal of Honoring Service, Inspiring Patriotism, and Embracing Freedom. It is for people who have served in the US military and their families, as well as those who are now serving and those who will serve in the future. Sarasota National Cemetery was created to provide a peaceful and reflective environment for soldiers’ families. The ceremonial amphitheater and art pieces were created in collaboration with the Veterans Affairs and National Cemetery Administration. The amphitheater seats 2,800 people, and art displays depict America’s heroes and military families’ devotion and sacrifice. Patriot Plaza is a memorial and celebration site for the living. Stories are told through the art installations. It depicts a military experience that has remained stable throughout time while also evolving. The art honoring and celebrating servicemen and their families was commissioned by four artists. This art collection is unusual among national cemeteries since it is the first to use documentary photography. Through this art, the thoughts and photos of warriors and their families will continue to communicate to future generations.
